How Much a Marriage License Cost?

Oregon law requires a couple to obtain a marriage license in order to have a legally binding wedding ceremony. Some states require a medical examination or blood tests in order to obtain a license. All require proof of identification and a license application fee.

The marriage license cost in Oregon is between $50.00 - $60.00. No extensions or refunds are made once the license is issued.

Most county clerk's offices accept cash, checks, and money orders but some only accept cash so please call to verify whether or not you need cash.

Obtaining a Marriage License in Oregon

ID Requirement:

Drivers License or certified birth certificate or passport and his or her Social Security number.

Residency Requirement:

Do not have to be a resident of Oregon.

If previously married:

A license can be issued one day after the final date of a divorce. The final divorce date is required on the marriage license application.

Application Requirement:

Both parties to a marriage should appear in person to obtain the license.

Waiting Period:

3 days. There is a three day waiting period from the day the license is issued until it can be used. It may be possible to purchase a waiver for the 3 day waiting period.

Blood Tests:

No test.

Under 18:

Anyone not yet 17 years of age cannot be legally married in the State of Oregon. A seventeen year-old can be married if they have the parent's or guardian's consent. Parent and guardian consent forms are available from the County Recording Office.

Name Change:

Getting a marriage license with your new name on it does not mean your name has automatically changed. If you need to change your last name, you can use an online marriage name change kit.

Same-Sex Marriages:

Yes. Same-sex marriage in Oregon became legal on May 19, 2014 when a U.S. federal district court judge ruled that Oregon's 2004 state constitutional amendment banning such marriages violated the Equal Protection Clause of the federal constitution.


Ministers of any church organized, carrying on its work, and having congregations in this state may perform marriages in this state if authorized by their church to do so.


License is valid for 60 days.
The license can only be used within the State of Oregon.

Copies of Oregon birth certificates, Oregon death certificates and public Oregon marriage records (for marriage licenses that were issued in Oregon). You may order copies of Oregon vital records through USAVital on an expedited basis.
